The Yamas in Yoga – Living in Truth, Peace & Presence

Updated: 4 days ago

Are you living your truth - Satya is one of the Yamas in Yoga

Truth is simple. But not always easy.

I used to think I was honest.

But the truth is – I’ve been hiding for as long as I can remember.

Even as a child, I learned to suppress what I truly felt. Sometimes consciously, sometimes not.I held back my emotions, my needs, my voice – out of fear. Fear that if I showed myself fully, I might no longer be loved.

So I adapted.I said what felt safe.I became who I thought I needed to be – to belong.

And this is why Satya, the yogic principle of truthfulness, touches me so deeply. It’s not just about not lying. It’s about daring to uncover what’s real beneath the roles, the masks, the pleasing.

But how can we live our truth – if we don’t even know what it is?

The second Yama in yoga philosophy is: Satya – truthfulness.

Not only towards others, but especially within.

And if we’re honest – most of us don’t even know what our real truth is.

We confuse beliefs with truth. We mistake our masks for authenticity. And sometimes, we don’t even realize that we’re editing ourselves – in the name of peace or performance.

This is where Human Design changed everything for me.

It gave me a mirror. A map. A way to see which truths were mine – and which were borrowed.

If you're ready to explore your own inner truth, I invite you: Book a Human Design Reading with me – and let’s peel back the layers together.

The Yamas – A Path of Integrity & Inner Alignment

The Yamas are the first limb of the eightfold path of yoga (Ashtanga Yoga). They offer 5 powerful ethical guidelines – not as rigid rules, but as living principles that help us grow in awareness, compassion and clarity.

Each Yama is a doorway to deeper connection – with yourself, others, and the sacredness of life.

The 5 Yamas at a Glance

1. Ahimsa – Non-violence

Ahimsa is the root of all yoga. It means more than “not hurting”.It’s a state of being where kindness, respect, and inner peace flow through everything you do – how you speak, think, eat, move and relate.

Ahimsa asks: Are you choosing peace – within and without?

2. Satya – Truthfulness

As shared above, Satya is the path of radical honesty. But real truth is never harsh. It's clarity infused with compassion. It asks you to be real – even if it’s uncomfortable.

Satya whispers: Are you truly being yourself – or just who you think you should be?

3. Asteya – Non-stealing

Asteya reminds us to live from abundance, not lack. It’s not just about physical stealing – but also emotional, energetic, even creative.Stealing time, attention, or ideas can all be subtle ways we fall out of alignment.

Asteya asks: Are you trusting life to provide what’s yours?

4. Brahmacharya – Energy Mastery

Traditionally linked to celibacy, Brahmacharya in modern times is about balanced living. It invites us to be conscious of how we use our energy – sexually, emotionally, mentally. To be guided by purpose, not impulse.

Brahmacharya asks: Are you using your energy to build the life your soul came here to live?

5. Aparigraha – Non-attachment

Aparigraha is the art of letting go – of things, people, identities, outcomes. It’s not about giving up what you love, but about releasing the fear of losing it.It’s trusting the flow of life.

Aparigraha whispers: What are you still holding on to that’s no longer serving you?

Why the Yamas matter now more than ever

In a world driven by performance, productivity and comparison, the Yamas call us back to presence. To softness. To soul.

They’re not just for yogis in white clothes on mountain tops – they’re for every single one of us navigating this messy, beautiful human life.

Living the Yamas doesn’t mean being perfect. It means being real.

And from that realness – true peace begins.
